Profile of Metro Manila The National Capital Region or Metropolitan Manila is the country's permier region. This rapidly growing urban center continues to attract people from all regions of the Philippines. As of 2000, total population of NCR was 9,906,046 (based on NSO, 2000 Census of Population and Housing). In 2006, population of NCR was estimated to have grown to 10,596,501 (based on population projections of CHD-MM). The NCR accounts for about 14% of the national population and about a third of the total urban population. The annual growth rate of NCR is 2.25%. Population density has grown to 16,661 persons per square kilometer (see table 1). With a land area of 636 square kilometers, NCR occupies only 0.2% of the country's total land area.
